Lot 1162

1858-D $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. Rich golden toning and boldly struck. Large mintmark. Variety 35-DD. This reverse was also used in 1859. It is one of two reverses known for the 1858-D and it is quite a bit scarcer than the medium mintmark. The 1858-D has a lower mintage figure than the 1857-D, but it is actually a somewhat more available coin. There are 125-150 pieces known with three dozen or so in About Uncirculated and another seven to nine in Uncirculated.

This is a very sharply struck 1858-D half eagle. It is reasonably well defined in the centers, which is unusual as almost all are weak in this area. The stars have full radial lines in the centers and the denticles show no weakness. It is frosty and has not been impaired by previous cleanings or chemical enhancement. In reference to its color, that is a lovely deep, rich orange-gold hue as can be seen on the obverse and the reverse photos supplied. This color is similar to the shades we have seen on the other high grade 1858-D half eagles that have been sold in recent years. A very attractive coin! Only 15,362 minted. Pop 4; 4 in 62; 1 in 65.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.
Ex: Ashland City.
