Lot 1160

1858-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-60. Some mint luster still evident. Satiny light honey gold surfaces display strong luster and very acceptable eye appeal. A whisper of olive toning adds to the overall aesthetic originality. Sharply struck in most areas, a characteristic that is seldom applied to any Charlotte Mint half eagle, although there is softness in the hair below ERT and on the eagle's neck area. "I have personally seen only two or three that I would grade Uncirculated," wrote David Akers (although since publication of his book 25 years ago, a total of 16 pieces have been certified in Mint condition; Douglas Winter gave this date a Rarity-8 rating in Uncirculated, but again that must be modified unless one wants to quibble with the grading services over what "Mint State" means. Very acceptable for the assigned grade, an appealing coin which has few equals in numismatics.

This variety has the C mintmark centered above the viewer's right upright of the V in FIVE. Pop 6; 10 finer. (PCGS # 8277) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Realized $7,475
