Madison, James. Partly-printed Document Signed as President, 1p, 16"x11", on vellum, n.p., 1810 May 29. Fine; toning at upper edge, a couple of small holes in blank vellum at upper left. A Mediterranean ship's paper with scalloped top edge and two nautical vignettes, for the "Brig Catharine Augusta of New York Joab Center master…of the burthen of Two hundred fifty six 22/95 tons…with Eight guns navigated with nineteen men…to pass…without any hinderance seizure or molestation…." The large paper Great Seal of the U.S. is intact at lower left. Countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith (who would be dismissed by Madison in 1811), and Collector of the Port of New York David Gelston.
