Madison, James (1751-1836) 4th President of the United States (1809-1817). Partly-printed Document Signed as President and Countersigned by Secretary of State James Monroe, 1p, 16½"x21½", Philadelphia, 1813 Feb 11. Fine. A four-language ship's paper, in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, granting permission to Robert Morris, captain of the brig Lightning, to travel from the port of Philadelphia to the French port of Bordeaux with a cargo of "sundries." James Madison's name is boldly printed at the top of each column. The document is also signed by the Collector of the Port of Philadelphia and by the District Naval Officer. Paper seals at left margin and lower edge are intact. Both Madison and Monroe's signatures are strong.
