Zapata, Emiliano (1879-1919 Mexican revolutionary. Typed Letter Signed as the General in Chief of the Mexican Republican Army of Liberation, 1p, in Spanish, 10½"x8¼", Headquarters in Tlaltizapán, 1914 Dec. 31 Very good; ruled paper is toned, with fold wear and some ink specks in left margin. Headed "Mexican Republic Army of Liberation," and addressed to Dr. P. Casales R, concerning payments for medications. The spectacular signature, 7½" across, is preceded by "Reform, Liberty, Justice and Law…." A very faint note is written vertically at lower left, probably by the doctor. In 1914, Zapata joined Pancho Villa in the struggle for control of the country against Venustiano Carranza. He won several battles but was ambushed and assassinated in Morelos. Zapata was primarily responsible for making agrarianism the focus of the Mexican Revolution.
