1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 40. Key date to the Morgan Dollars. Seldom seen in circulated proof condition. Light toning. Pop 1 in this grade.
As Silver Dollar experts will tell you, only 880 Proof 1895s were issued. There were an additional 12,000 business strike made that year as well, but apparently these were all melted in 1918 or thereabouts when 270 million Silver Dollars had to be destroyed in pursuance to the Pittman Act of 1918.
Today, only the 880 Proofs sold to collectors in original Proof sets did not get destroyed. And of those, it is likely only 500 examples out of the original mintage are available for purchase, many of them mishandled but surprisingly few in actual circulated condition like the present specimen. It is always a joy to be able to catalog a sharp-looking 1895 whatever its technical grade, like that being offered here. We hope the successful bidder will enjoy owning this King of the Morgan Dollars as much as we did having it pass through our sale.
