Lot 988

1868-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. This reconstruction era date/mint combination has a low mintage of only 13,500. This usually weakly struck issue shows only slight softness on the high points. Circulation marks as one would expect for the grade. Bright yellow gold color with some light peach tone within protected areas. Breen-6957, "Very rare (and) prohibitively rare above VF." From about the mid-1850s to the end of the 1870s, the mintages of gold eagles were, with an exception or two, quite low. For the collector interested in US gold, concentration within this quarter century would provide quite a challenge and great fun during the quest. Pop 19, with 13 in AU-58. No mint state examples has been graded by either service.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
