1870-CC $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58 P.Q. An incredible quality specimen of a Carson City Classic. Well struck with frosty mint luster in honey color gold with some golden-orange highlights. We note a minuscule drift mark (mint caused) on the reverse from the eagle's wing thru the M in AMERICA. This will be a diagnostic reference point for future identification. A notable rarity from the first year of mint operations. This coin with its mintage of only 7,675 has been long recognized as the rarest Carson City half eagle. It is understood that the early Carson City issues were primarily circulated in the general region and thus saw long, hard, intense use in commerce. The result is today when found is usually seen well worn, with Fine to Very Fine being the norm, and an EF example being quite extraordinary. The offering of this treasured coin is an important numismatic event. PCGS reports 6 at this level with 2 in MS-61 as best graded. We suspect that the half dozen recorded at this level probably represents re-submissions of the same coin. It is our opinion that this coin is Premium Quality for the designated grade and is the finest example we have ever offered (PCGS # 8320) .
Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000.
