Lot 3099

Great Britain. Pattern bronzed Halfpenny, 1860. Victoria. P-2158. Freeman-890 (as R19). Plain edge. Design by Adolph Weyl. Delightful small young or bare head of the queen, combined with a neatly engraved royal shield on which appear, instead of the traditional insignia, an elephant, a seal and a kangaroo; and the legends on both sides are in English instead of Latin abbreviations. It has been suggested many times, but not absolutely proven, that this engraver's enigmatic patterns were really aimed at the colonial coinages; certainly the fauna on the shield support this concept. When the 1860 patterns were ignored, the engraver redid the portrait as the Jubilee approached, resulting in P-2185/94, showing a crowned and veiled portrait of an older monarch. Made in various metals, these are all very rare pieces. A high-quality example of this rarity. NGC graded Proof 65.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.
The Cheshire Collection.
