Lot 3073

Great Britain. Penny, 1869. Victoria Bun Head. S.3954. KM-749.2. The rarest date VBH penny; tied with 1864, but the favored "key" in most collectors' minds. NGC would not slab this coin, calling it "cleaned," but that will not interfere with the bidding for this piece, in our opinion, because it's quite pleasing looking, despite being lightened of its natural brown toning. Can be easily improved, or will tone down over time. It has many positive features: bold clear date, sharp strike on the designs, large unmarked rims, and very few marks. Maybe not the finest known but still highly desirable; its inclusion in this mighty collection may be seen as an indication of how very rare these rare dates are. Worth a strong bid between Spink values of £550 for EF and £1,650 for Unc. AU-55.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,200.
The Cheshire Collection.
