Lot 1922

Russia. Novodel Ruble, 1801-SM AI. Bitkin-H35; Sev-2488. Paul I. Edge-6. This is a superb specimen, very well struck and beautifully toned in silvery gray and iridescent hues. The surfaces are very prooflike and nearly immaculate. A curious and attractive effect of striking, as if the planchet was squeezed into a somewhat smaller collar, is a slight elevation of the fields toward the rims, especially on the obverse. This type is rated R2, with 10-19 specimens estimated extant. We doubt if any of those, should there be that many, will be as nice as this very choice example. Extremely rare and the only specimen seen in the past 25 years. PCGS graded MS-64.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 30,000.
The Dr. Robert D. Hesselgesser Collection, Ex-Virgil Brand Collection.
