Silver Award Medal of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture. 1863. This Civl War era silver award medal designed and signed by G.H. Lovett in the upper left exergue is 51.3 mm in diameter and weighs 51.91 grams. Obv: Three allegorical female figures standing before a screw press; Reverse:: Arms of Ohio in a wreath of agricultural products with legend above. Below "Awarded To" and engraved in flowing script "Philo Thompson Best Trotting Stallion N.P. Townshend Pres. 1863". The ls in stallion are crossed as ts would be, likely in error. Extremely Fine with a minor edge nick at about 3 o'clock on the reverse. This medal was probably awarded during the Ohio State Fair normally held in mid summer as in many other states. Some miles to the east in Pennsylvania, at aproximately the same time (July 1-3, 1863) a more memorable event was taking place at Gettysburg where the bloodletting was fierce. Ohio's own 8th Regiment of Volunteer Infantry was there doing their part. Rich county squires bred their race horses while other men died in huge numbers. In wartime, for some life goes on quite normally. It did then, it does now and thus it will ever be.
Estimated Value $300 - 500.

Realized $357
