Lot 1363

(Iron Tail) (c. 1850-1916) Ogala war chief; toured Europe with Buffalo Bill Cody; one of three Indians used by James Earle Frasier for the composite portrait used on the "Indian head nickel." 9¾ x 7 waist-up portrait (image is 6 x 4¾ inches) by Bosworth Studio, Springfield, Mass. Iron Tail's thumb print has been mounted at lower left, with "Thumb-print of Indian Chief Iron Tail July 1913" written below it, probably because Iron Tail could not write. One mark at right edge of mount affects nothing.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.
