1955 Lincoln Cent. Doubled Die Obverse. NGC graded MS-65 Red. A fiery red, gem example of one America's most well known modern rarities! The story of the 1955 Double Die penny has caused countless numbers of children and adults to religiously rummage through their change. Produced by problems that arise during the multiple softenings and hubbings that occur during the production of a die, the 1955 is believed to have been produced during a graveyard shift the summer of that year. An estimated 20,000 to 24,000 examples of this error were struck and the chief coiner at the time decided to integrate them into millions of normally hubbed coins, a decision based on his reluctance to remove the double die errors at the expense of the millions of correctly hubbed 1955 pennies. Due to placement into circulation, it is seldom that a true red Double Die example is found. While brown and red-brown examples appear in the near-gem to gem grades rarely, a true red gem is spectacularly rare!
The present specimen displays satiny surfaces possessing complete, full mint red color. Splashes of violet grace Lincoln's hair and coat. Frost is see on the high points and recessed areas of Lincoln's portrait. The doubling is dramatic and unquestionable. Tied for Finest Known at NGC with only 9 other specimens! The sky is the limit with regards to this issues future and we are sure this famous modern small cent rarity will receive competitive bidding.
