1857-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65 With the gold foil tag from the S.S. Central America treasure. 20A Spiked Shield. SSCA 0370. A fantastically lustrous and appealing gem Type I double eagle. Rich orange-gold surfaces with finely granular texture. Everything struck to the sharpest degree. One can almost envision stacks of these newly minted double eagles being loaded onto the S.S. Central America. Prior to the discovery and recovery of the S.S. Central America treasure a Type I double eagle in this condition was unheard of and reserved for only the deepest of pockets.
