Lot 2340

Condition Census 1868 Gold Eagle Rarity. NGC graded AU-58. Near mint state detail with rich gold coloration and radial luster. A touch of reflectivity to the fields and some original mint frost in recessed areas of the devices. All of the With Motto eagles from 1866 through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and Condition Census survivors generally are in the choice AU range. The 1868, with a recorded mintage of 10,730, has the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle produced from 1866-1873. With that said, do not be fooled into thinking that this issue is easy to locate in the choice AU range. In fact, neither PCGS or NGC has ever graded an uncirculated example and only a single AU-58 example has been graded by PCGS. With 13 AU-58 examples supposedly graded at NGC, we have a feeling several of the reported survivors are resubmission errors from dealers/collectors hoping for an uncirculated grade. One thing is for sure, the present 1868 is a Condition Census example of a tough year, and time frame, for eagles. Identified by a vertical nick left of star 2 and a scuff near star 3, into the field.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
