Lot 2324

1801 $10 Gold Capped Bust. PCGS graded AU-58. A gorgeous greenish gold and frosty example of this early eagle! Liberty's portrait is mark free, well struck and without any signs of wear. The curl above the forehead is exceptionally sharp, as is the curl on the cheek, right of ear. Only two obverse marks are mentionable for the sake of identification, a small scratch above the 80 of the date and another in the right field left of stars 9 and 10. The reverse is just as sharp and just as uncirculated in condition as the obverse. The feather detail in both the wings and breast are untouched and the surfaces are exceptional in quality. A small fishhook shaped lint mark under the right leg of M identifies this reverse. The entire coin is struck on a problem free planchet that displays absolutely no adjustment marks. This variety is immediately recognizable by the vertical spines seen in the center top of the cap, a result of die clashing. Unquestionably choice for the grade and a specimen that will undoubtedly bring strong bidding from the quality conscious gold or type collector. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder (PCGS # 8564) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.
