1915-S $5 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Any San Francisco Indian half eagle is tough in MS-62 but the 1915-S is one of the toughest San Francisco half eagles of this series and of 20th century gold. The present example has a frosty look and slightly granular surfaces. On the reverse, the luster is thick around the wing, across the feathers and in the upper left field. The mintmark is a little sharper than usual, only the left side being "blob-like". After the 1909-S half eagle, the 1915-S has one of the lowest total number of coins graded. PCGS has graded only 30 examples finer than MS-62, the finest being a group at the MS-64 level. A choice example, such as the present coin, is truly hard to find and represents an important opportunity for the knowledgeable gold specialist. PCGS population of 50 in MS-62 (PCGS # 8531) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
