Lot 2179

1913 $2.50 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 68. An immaculate, shimmering gem and one of the finest proof 1913 quarter eagles in existence! The matte proof and sandblast finish proofs of this series can be quite difficult to grade. The incused design coupled with the finely granular finishes can make telling the difference between a Proof 65 and Proof 66 a serious challenge. Luckily, the absolutely stunning condition of this specimen is so rare that bidders who have previously viewed these proof issues will immediately be able to deduce that this is one of the finest proof examples of all the proof Indian Head quarter eagles. There are no marks that are observable with the naked eye. With close inspection at 6X, one will find a small, circular mint-made depression left of star 9 (for purposes of identification). There is a small vertical break in the granularity less than 0.5mm long just below the first S of STATES. For the date, only 165 were struck and most gold researchers and dealers agree that a sizable chunk of that mintage was most likely melted at year end due to inadequate collector demand at the time. Tied for Finest Known with one other specimen in PF-68 at NGC.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

Realized $40,250
