1875 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61 "Prooflike" on holder. A classic date from U.S. gold coinage! With regards to the gold dollar series, the 1875 stands alone as the only gold dollar ever produced with an official mintage under 1,000 coins. The notable 1861-D rarity, with no official mintage recorded, has an estimated mintage of 1,000-1,500. Another huge gold dollar rarity, the 1849-C Open Wreath, is from a recorded mintage of 11,634 (the 11,634 pertaining to the Closed Wreath die marriage). Therefore, the 1875 gold dollar is a very significant rarity from this series and from all of U.S. gold. One could make a case that the 1875 gold dollar issue sells at a discount to its rarity as well as the price/rarity ratios of other well known, larger denomination rarities.

The present example has the strike and device quality of a higher grade. Some hairlines are noted on both obverse and reverse fields, but this is a prooflike specimen and hairlines are always more apparent over highly reflective gold surfaces. The reverse has a scratch diagonally through the central portion. This example, one of only a handful this nice, can be identified by a small planchet depression right of the last A in AMERICA. Population 2; 1 in 64 PL; 1 in 65 PL.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
