Lot 2136

1860 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. An original and very attractive early Type III proof gold dollar. The Cameo condition of this specimen is unquestionable and the reflectivity of the fields is uninhibited by any film or toning. Aside from some trivial marks here and there, no major impairments or scratches are noted on this significant rarity. Just left of the earlobe of Liberty are two diagnostic spines pointing towards the center cheek. More proof gold dollars were produced in 1860-1861 than all of the other years from this decade combined. In 1860, 154 were minted but collector demand was weak and only a fraction of this original mintage ended up in the hands of collectors. Of those that did leave the Mint, it is estimated that approximately 30 or so exist in all grades today. A very scarce issue and very rare in Cameo condition. PCGS has graded only 4 coins Cameo, this specimen, 1 in PR-64 Cam, 1 in PR-65 Cam and 1 in PR-66 Cam (PCGS # 87610) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400.
