Lot 1773

1878 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. The year 1878 was the first year that the Philadelphia Mint produced Trade Dollars in the proof format only. A mintage of 900 proofs is reported and the average survivor will generally grade in the Proof 62-Proof 64 range. In gem condition, the 1878 Proof Trade Dollar is quite rare. This specimen has a golden appearance accented by steel blue tones, the reverse having additional magenta iridescence. Well struck, as is to be expected, and only the faintest whisper of hairlines are seen on strongly mirrored fields. A solid gem with very pleasing eye appeal. NGC population of 41 in PF65, 13 in PF-66 and 4 in PF-67.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

Realized $10,350
