1878 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. While at first glance a subdued gray color, a soft tilt backwards reveals beautiful yellow, olive and lavender toning over strongly mirrored fields. The year 1878 marks the first time that Trade Dollars were a proof-only issue from the Philadelphia Mint, a trend that continued through 1885. Only 900 proofs were produced in 1878 and gem survivors are scarce to say the least. The present example is a softly toned gem that would be a perfect fit for anyone's high quality type set. NGC population of 41 in PR-65, 13 in PR-66 and 4 in PR-67 as finest.
