1821 Capped Bust Dime. Small date. . JR-9, Rarity-2. NGC graded MS-64. With a mintage for the date of 1,186,512, certain Large Date and Small Date examples can be found with relative ease. With regards to total populations of Large and Small Date issues, PCGS and NGC on average have graded about 1/10 the number of Small Dates as they have Large Dates. Therefore, this type is going to be a bit more of a challenge. The Small Date type is quickly discernible from the Large Date type, the date appearing to hug the dentilation at 6:00 and the three known Small Date die marriages are each fairly common (JR-10 being the scarcest). This is all great until you need to find a choice and original near-gem example. With wholly white and lustrous surfaces, the present Capped Bust Dime is quite rare. The strike is sharp and hair detail is complete, each strand and curl fully brought up. Wing and claw detail on the reverse should be applauded as well. Only very minor hairlines are keeping this example from the gem level. For this variety, this is the second finest example graded at NGC, a single MS-65 the finest attributed example for the JR-9 variety.
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,500.
