1878 Shield Nickel. . Breen-2509. PCGS graded Proof 66. A lovely gem proof example in an earlier die state, the shaft of the 7 still visible in the lower loop of the last 8 in date. Beautiful lavender frost on the devices contrasts with the strongly mirrored fields in a near-cameo state. Identified by a small curved lint mark attached inner loop of 5. A small spot of verdigris is noted at 12:00 on the obverse. A proof-only date with mintage of only 2,350 coins (PCGS # 3832) .
