Hammarskjold, Dag & Thant, U. Photographs Signed by Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, and by U Thant, the third Secretary-General. Hammarskjold (1905-1961) served from 1953 until 1961, when he died in plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo. He signed in greenish-blue ink on an 8 x 5 inch, chest-up portrait. U Thant (1909-1974) served from 1961 to 1974; he signed in both English and a Burmese language at upper left of a 10 x 8 inch head-and-shoulders portrait.
