Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 26

Lot 1818

$20 Gold Liberty. 1901 Reverse Struck Thru Mint Error. NGC graded AU-53. An impressive example of a rare Double Eagle minting error! When this piece was struck a piece of foreign matter managed to squeeze between the reverse die and the blank planchet. The resulting error is a large depression at the base of the shield that covers the tail. The technical grade of the coin is actually finer than AU53 but that is a mute point due to the error being the significant property. Gold error coins are actually quite scarce and probably undervalued in comparison to error coins of other more common metals.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.
