Lot 1658

$5 Gold Liberty. 1891-CC. NGC graded MS-65. Gorgeous, uninterrupted satiny luster over rose-gold to orange-gold surfaces. A fantastic Carson City rarity and one of the finest known! The obverse is pristine with only the faintest hairline mark under the bun of Liberty's hair. On the reverse, the eagle is frosty and surrounded by rich satiny luster. A mint made planchet flaw under the first A of AMERICA is the best way to identify this superb gem specimen.

The Carson City Mint began producing half eagles in 1870 and continued until 1884, when they stopped production for a period of 5 years. Production resumed in 1890 and continued only until 1893 when the Carson City issued its' final half eagle. Obtaining a gem Carson City example before 1884 is extremely difficult and to realistically have a chance of obtaining a gem Carson City half eagle, one has to look to the period of 1890-1893. This superb 1891 Carson City specimen represents a grand opportunity to acquire one of the few gems that exist. NGC has graded 6 with none finer but we highly suspect this figure is a tad higher than it should be.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Realized $21,850
