$5 Gold Liberty. 1867. NGC graded AU-55. The early "With Motto" half eagles from the Philadelphia Mint are notorious for their low mintages, low surviving populatoins and prices that have not reflected their true scarcity. In 1867, the second year of "With Motto" coinage, the Philadelphia Mint struck 6,870 half eagles. Of this original mintage, perhaps 2-3 uncirculated examples are known and acquiring an AU55 to AU58 example is the most likely scenario for only a handful of collectors. NGC population is 8 in AU55, 11 in AU58 and a single MS60 as finest.
