Morgan Dollar. 1921. Zerbe. PCGS graded Proof 65. A soothing and lustrous example of the "Zerbe" proof. Dark golden and gray toning over semi-reflective fields. Liberty's cheek is nearly flawless and very lustrous. The eagle's breast was spared any nicks or scratches and the reverse fields are a bit more reflective than those of the obverse. Frosty devices and the typically seen small spot of strike weakness seen on the wreath just to the right of the bow. A beautfiul gem rarity! PCGS has graded only 16 in this grade with ony 7 in PR66 as the finest.
After seventeen years of no proof production of Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint, Farran Zerbe put his request to George T. Morgan that proofs be made to his benefit. The result was the production of what numismatists now classify as two types of proof issues. The "Zerbe" proofs are characterized by a crossbreed of proof and proof-like qualities where proof-like fields and gem uncirculated luster mix with square dentils and other decidedly proof features. The "Chapman" proofs were struck from different dies and display fully reflective and brilliant fields. Additionally, the "Chapman" proofs are much more scarce than the "Zerbe" proofs (PCGS # 7341) .
