Sale 25

Lot 645

1825 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. 5 over 4. Browning-3, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-64. A gorgeous, Prooflike example that in former years would have been called a Proof (in fact, Breen mentions an untraced Proof of this particular variety). The fields are fully reflective, with no patches of satiny luster and the toning is a scrumptious blend of greens, reds and golds. The strike is also excellent, but not quite up to the standards required of a Proof. Struck from an early state of the dies, leaving no question that this was an 1825/4 overdate. This piece compares favorably, and is decidedly more Prooflike, than the NGC MS-65 Eliasberg coin. Housed in an old NGC holder and worth a second look.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Realized $5,463
