Lot 41

1841 Coronet Head Half Cent. PCGS graded Proof 63 Red & Brown. Rare, Proof-only date. Lovely, bluish violet, with reddish highlights. PCGS reports 3 at this level, with none finer. Housed in an older-generation, green-label PCGS holder.

From 1840-1848, Half Cents were issued only as Proofs, apparently in very limited quantities. Later, when collectors developed an interest in the series and found it nearly impossible to find Half Cents from this period, their thirst was slaked by none other than the U.S. Mint, which produced restrikes on at least two separate occasions. Originals can be told from the Restrikes by the size of the berries in the wreath (large = originals; small = restrikes). All are rare and in great demand today (PCGS # 1255) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Realized $5,175
