1865 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. A pleasing, high-grade example of this rare business strike, with coppery-orange colors and a nice, bold strike. Only 1,520 1865 Quarter Eagles were made, along with 25 Proofs, and very few examples have survived. PCGS and NGC have graded less than 40 pieces combined, virtually all of which are in circulated grades. NGC alone reports 1 in this grade, 2 in AU-55, 7 in AU-58, and none in Mint State. To show how tough this date actually is, Bass coin was a PCGS AU-53 which sold for $17,825 in October 1999.
