Sale 25

Lot 106

1867 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. PQ. A definite, premium-quality example that sure looks like a 65 to us. The reverse is certainly all there, with its crisp, bold strike. The obverse, on the other hand, appears slightly grainy under magnification, due in part to a late state of the dies and some planchet roughness that was not obliterated in the striking process. However, as clean as it is, it seems unfair not to call this a 65, but that's just our opinion. As it stands, this is an important example of the date, as very few Gem or better Reds have been graded. PCGS shows 56 in this grade, 15 in MS-65 Red, and only 1 in MS-66 Red. Thus, you can see the incentive to try for an upgrade. Keep in mind that we only submitted this coin once on behalf of our consignor.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
