Lot 736

Choice Core-Formed Glass Alabastron. Greek, Eastern Mediterranean, c. 4th century BC. Vessel of narrow ovoid form, bordering on the cylindrical, with thick everted rim. Glass of fine cobalt-royal blue, with three groups of spirally trailed yellow glass, connected to each other by a descending spiral. The mid and upper registers marvered, which imparts a ribbed surface to the upper half of the bottle. Two tiny lug handles near the shoulder. Although there are some thin, shallow age fissures in the surface, looking like repaired cracks, the alabastron is wholly free of cracks or repairs and restoration, and solid -- and rare thus in this preservation! With thin iridescence, which does not impair the excellent colors. Length: 4-1/2". A truly excellent piece of early glass.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,250.

Realized $1,208
