Goldminer's Sketch of St. Catherine's Island, Brazil,1849. Pencil sketch made by a Connecticut Yankee heading to the California gold fields, 8½ x 6¾ in., with note by artist, in pencil, on verso: "Sketch of Josiah Savage en route from Cromwell Ct to California, 1849." The drawing shows palm trees, a small house, and a path rising from the sea. St. Catherine's Island, southwest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was a popular stop for American ships headed to the California gold fields; it was about a two-month sea voyage from New England. Apparently, all vessels that docked were required to remain in quarantine for a few days, and Savage took this opportunity to illustrate the area. Material done during a trip to California is scarce.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.
