Motherwell, Robert (1915-91) American painter. Autograph Letter Signed ("R.M."), at the bottom of a typewritten letter to him dated May 18, 1977, from Nancy MacDonald of Spanish Refugee Aid, Inc., on the letterhead of that group, 1 page, quarto. Motherwell responds to an inquiry about a lithograph that he was to do to aid the organization: "Events have thrown my schedule off more than a year - perhaps two - so to my regret I must refuse any commitments until I get caught up…." Some folds, else Fine. Motherwell was one of the original Abstrat Expressionists; probably his best-known works are those in the series titled Elegies to the Spanish Republic.
