Bruce, Blanche Kelso. Rare Card Signed as Register of the U.S. Treasury ("B.K. Bruce, Register U.S. Treasy."), no place, no date, 2¼ x 4 in. Light toning and a few ink specks. He was born a slave in 1841in Virginia. He later attended Oberlin College, became a planter in Mississippi, served as sheriff and tax collector in Bolivar County (1872-75), then was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1875-81; he was the second Black senator from Mississippi, but the first to serve a full term. President Garfield appointed him Register of the Treasury in 1881. He was Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia 1891-93, then again Register of the Treasury from 1897 until his death in 1898. Bruce's signature is rare.
