Fr-1958-B. 1934-B, $5 Federal Reserve Note FP# 212 Error. Cracking fresh example of this error.

Micro numbers were used from the beginning of the small-size period until early 1938 when a change was made. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing increased the size of the plate numbers from .5mm (micro) to 1mm (macro). This happened during the 1934 series of Federal Reserve Notes and thus created the 1934-A series. 1934 series of notes carry the micro numbers while the 1934-A series carry the macro numbers. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing used up a fair number of back stock thus creating Mules (Notes with different size plate numbers.) within the series; this note is not a Mule. It is, by all definitions an engraving error as the size of the numbers are closer to .8mm. The engraving error is so small and thus unnoticeable that it was thought to be by collectors a trail size or a late finish plate for many years. Even the standard reference on small-size notes (Oakes - 4th edition, Krause Publications) lists the note first as a Mule and then later as an error. The New York Federal Reserve is so far the only district known with this rare error. Choice Uncirculated. Estimated Value $700 - 900
