Lot 2560

1861. NGC graded Proof 66. A colorful Gem, with lilac centers surrounded by blue and gold borders. Exceptional quality and superb surfaces. NGC reports only 5 at this level and none higher. The only finer example of which we are aware is a lone PR-67 graded by PCGS.
The mintage figure of 1,000 Proofs for this date is surely incorrect. A peek at the PCGS Population reports that fewer 1861 Proof Silver Dollars have been certified than any other date in the 1860's, some of which have mintages as low as 460 coins! Thus, what may appear to be the most common at first blush is actually the rarest of the bunch! Estimated Value $16,000 - 18,000

Realized $16,100
