Lot 624

1855 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. One of an estimated 50 Proofs struck of this date. Nicely toned in lilac-gray, with scattered flecks of burnt-gold color and highlights of golden iridiescence for added attraction. Housed in an old style, green label PCGS holder. PCGS reports 7 in this grade with 2 higher. Mintages for Proof coins prior to 1858 are very low because the general public had no idea that such coins were even available -- only a small coterie of well-connected dealers and collectors were aware that they could apply to the Mint and, for a small premium over the face value of the coins, obtain Proof versions. Eventually, the Mint caught on and realized that they had a real potential for profits in their Proof Coin Department, a potential realized when they "went public" in 1858 (PCGS # 6998) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 20,000.

Realized $19,550
