Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 2

Lot 1867

Near Gem Proof 1862 Double Eagle. PCGS graded Proof 64. Back 137 years ago when this coin was struck, our country was being torn apart by a Civil War (funny, what war do you know of that's ever been "civil?"). The Philadelphia Mint employees, when they weren't looking up the street for Johnny Reb, managed to squeeze off just 35 of these Proofs. Of those, PCGS has graded 7, one below and six in this grade. Perhaps some of these are the same coin trying to get in a higher grade holder. We just don't know for sure. There are none graded higher. The devices are deeply frosted and float seamlessly on the glassy mirror fields. Examination with a strong glass locates numerous faint hairlines from gentle wiping with a cloth, but only when tilted under a light. Nearly perfect in its manufacture, the only identifying mark is a minute planchet flake between the AM of AMERICA. Currently in PCGS holder #6581647.
