Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 2

Lot 1859

One of the Finer 1851-O Double Eagles. NGC graded AU-58. One of the very finest of this date, with a scant 13 so graded with only 3 graded higher by NGC. Frosty luster abounds in the fields, and all the devices are well struck for the date. Liberty's cheek is especially nice, without the usual bagmarks that frequently mar these large, soft coins. With large numbers of coins hanging over the market (virtually all San Francisco Mint) from the "Central America" and "Brother Jonathan" shipwrecks, date collectors will no doubt be searching for choice examples of the Philadelphia and New Orleans mint issues, like this coin, to complete their sets.
