Scarce gem Proof 1866 Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 65. Although long reported that an estimated 125 were struck in Proof, it now appears that number was too low. It is now estimated by PCGS that 300 were struck. Of these, only 86 have been graded as Proof 65, with 46 graded a notch or two higher. Important as the first year of its type, and used only two years with Rays on the reverse. Untoned and without the usual flecks and problems that so often mar these nickel coins.
