Lot 1085

Arab Near East, A Pair of Antique Small Knives. The knives of traditional form, with waisted handles, curved blades and matching sheathes. The blades within, each with circular "hallmark," appear to be even older heirloom pieces that were refitted for continued use. Knives' exterior metal work decorated with incised geometric designs, or filigree; both employ decorative glass "gems." Along with these, two finely framed, ornamental painted "ivory" plaques, painted in Qajar or Moghul styles. One with a delicately colored scene of seven horsemen playing polo. The second, by a finer hand, shows a pair of riders, symmetrically displayed, holding hunting lances, on black stallions, richly caparisoned. Interesting to this work is the use of animal and human heads as "hidden" but still recognizable elements of the background. Both frames with handsomely inlaid borders. Knives show some modest repairs. The paintings choice, although a section of the frame on the smaller one shows some minor damage. Knife lengths: 9-1/2"; 9". Frame sizes: 4-3/8" x 9-3/4"; 6-1/2" x 11-1/4". Lot of 4 items.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.
