Ancient Rome. Lot of Seven Mostly Julio-Claudian Silver Coins, c. 49 BC. - 69 AD. A good beginner's collection of "Twelve Caesars," with the Otho being scarcer than his usual silver. Included are 3 Denarii of Julius Caesar, d. 44 BC: Italian mint, c. 49 BC., Elephant / Sacrificial implements (RSC 49); African mint, c. 46 BC., Venus head right / Aeneas and Anchises (BMCRR 31); and Greek mint, c. 48 BC., Diademed and wreathed head of Clementia(?) / Trophy of Gallic arms (RSC 18). Augustus, 27 BC.-14 AD., Denarius of Lugdunum: Laureate head right / Caius and Lucius Caesars, arms between (RSC 43c). Tiberius, 14-37 AD, "Tribute Penny": Chair leg ornament on reverse unusually elaborate, almost resembling thunderbolts (RSC 16b). An Antiocene Tetradrachm of Nero, 54-68 AD., Year 111 = 62/63 AD.: Aegis-clad, laureate bust right / Eagle right, with palm and thunderbolt (Prieur 85 var.). Lastly, a Denarius of Otho, 69 AD.: Head right / Pax left (RIC --; BMCRE --; RSC 4a). The Clementia Caesar with some porosity, and that on the Venus faint and overall even, otherwise rest of coins on good metal and lightly toned. The Otho appears to be a rare variety. Lot of 7 coins. Coins average Fine, one or two somewhat better, one perhaps less.
