Elagabalus, 218-222 AD. AE 24 (13.92g). Minted at Sidon in Phoenicia. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right of Elagabalus. Reverse: Cart of Astarte containing baetyl; two figures (musicians?) below; on top, palm branches. Grose 9501; BMC 256; cf. Weber 8064. Rare. Glossy chocolate brown Very Fine. Estimated Value $400 - UP
It is likely that the sacred baetyl reposing in the cart is the "fallen star" or meteorite which Astarte consecrated at the sanctuary at nearby Tyre.
