Lot 28

1804 C-2 R6 AG3. Sharpness VG8 but there is carefully engraved graffiti in the obverse fields, possibly American Indian symbols plus the initials "PP." The reverse is unmarked and the surfaces are smooth. Glossy light steel brown and olive; probably lightly cleaned and retoned. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early, with a die crack through the tops of ERTY, strongest on the right half. The extension of the crack up from the top of that E has not formed. Softly struck on the left side of the reverse thanks to non-parallel die faces, as always seen on this very rare variety. The date and legends are complete and clear except for the usual weakness on ED ST. The reverse is rotated 10-15 degrees clockwise. Too bad about the engraving; would have been one of the finest examples known of this very rare variety. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
