Lot 1155

Odovacar. Gold Tremissis (1.48 g), 476-493. Ravenna, in the name of Zeno. D N ZENO [PE]RP AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Zeno right, of rough style. Reverse: Cross within wreath; COMO[B]. RIC 3640 (r3); Depeyrot 43/7 (Milan). Very Rare.

Flavius Odoacer, also spelled Odovacer or Odovacar, was a soldier and statesman of barbarian background, who deposed the child emperor Romulus Augustulus and became King of Italy. Odoacer's deposition of Romulus Augustulus is traditionally seen as marking the end of the Western Roman Empire as well as Ancient Rome. Very Fine. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
RIC notes two styles of this obverse legend variety from Ravenna which was struck in the name of Zeno by Odovacer, the leader of the Germanic foederati who was de facto ruler over much of Italy during the reign of Julius Nepos. The first, RIC 3638, is of good style, while the second, RIC 3640, is quite crude, like the example offered here with an elongated head narrowing at the crown.

Realized $3,120
