Lot 975

1857 N-2 R1+ Small Date PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with a puff of reddish brown toning and microscopic roughness at CENT into the wreath below CE. Otherwise this cent is quite attractive. Close to mint state sharpness but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Very early die state (VEDS), the earliest seen, with hard, slightly reflective fields on both sides. The die lines over UNITE are sharp and fine diagonal die polishing lines cover the fields on both sides. The tip of the coronet is softly struck, as usual for this variety. Our grade is AU50+. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 6 finer: 1 in 63, 4 in 64, 1 in 65. Value $275 - UP
Ex Thomas D. Reynolds-Robert E. Matthews Collection-Matthews Estate.
